FUSD board approves use of snow day minutes

FUSD did not technically build snow days into this year's calendar, but have called seven so far this winter. The remaining days will be made up on days previously scheduled as student holidays. The first of those days is Friday, a day originally scheduled for staff development.

-- Stem walls are coming together for the southern wing being rebuilt at Flagstaff High School. Workers are also making progress on the footings for the kitchen area and the walls in the commons for the new serving area. Assistant superintendent Bob Kuhn said construction has been slowed by the heavy snow and resulting mud but contractors are working around the weather as much as possible.

Maintenance officials are still totaling the cost of cleaning up after January's historic storms and working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Coconino County on what can be submitted for damage and billable services-- the county and the city both declared states if emergency after powerful, back-to-back storms dumped nearly 5 feet of snow and 2 inches of rain over four days.

-- Christine Mayer, career and technical education program director for the county-wide vocational education district, informed the board about the Northern Arizona CTE Career Expo, slated for Saturday, April 3, at the Skydome. The expo will feature businesses and career-related programs from school districts, community colleges and universities, and is open to students of all ages.
